Deadwood interrupted – a momentary rant.

Lately on xanga, I’ve noticed it’s a big, neat thing to disable right clicking with a little applet that pops up something like “plz don’t steel my pictars” or “Pirating fuctions removed, silly.”

OK, whatever. Follow your bliss.
But:

1. This keeps NO ONE from stealing a picture. There’s three workarounds for that I can think of offhand, and one of them is easier then right clicking.

2. I employ an unusualy rabid pop up blocker, and as a consequence I often right click on a link, as this allows me to “open in a new window” without hitting the key that temporarially disables the blocker. Right clicking disablers prevent this.

3. Many of the people using this googlebombed for the picture in the first place.

I’m not saying it’s wrong or evil, or anything like that, I just think it’s a little like . . . worrying intensely about copywriting the first draft of your novel about vampires in a small suburban neighborhood, or something.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!
Oh that was so hysterical, I snorted pizza out my nose…

  2. good point.
firstly if you put it on the web aren’t you somehow making it available to everyone to enjoy for free?
i used to highlight the text i was reading (just a dumb habit really.. sometimes it helps me keep my place in a long blog when theres lots of distractions, or when someone has a really annoying background or supercool text color thats unusable..

    1. you can always do a screenshot then crop and save…
    2. view the html source by clicking view|view source on the browser, look in the html then just put the picture URL in the browser and save that “sans javascript” like this:
http://p5.xanga.com/55/70/55703877b4f7cca0ee676be5c208d5c5786368.jpg, rightclick the new picture and save that

on the other hand i can understand someone wanting to protect something they worked on for a long time…

  3. yeah, but it doesn’t protect anything. In IE you can still hover the mouse and a little set of save/print icons pops up in the upper left of the pic . . . no right click needed to save…

And, always glad to entertain, AB.

  4. yeha i know. i know. wise words fucker. and… well, you know i’m gonna pull through that eventually i’m just gonna kick my ass for being self indulgent and wussy but…gah. i haveno one i can talk to. and writing it down and burning it up don’t cut it. i need people to KNOW sometimes. i need to not feel so alone and walled off. so…xanga.
anyways. i’m good, you’re good. much love monkey man. also, that suburban vampire thing made me snort beer out my nose. beer and pizza, man, can’t go wrong. 🙂
k, dude, i need to sleep. take er easy eh? i’m glad you’re posting more. hope things are well for you.

  5. i just take a screen cap before passing off other people’s pretentious pictures as my own. it’s not stealing, it’s sampling.

  6. Son of a bitch, don’t tell everyone my vampire story idea!

Yeah I know, assfucker took that comment before me. But he sucks.
